A Haunting In Lincoln 👻: TLL Mini Edition

The Lincoln Ledger: Mini Edition | October 25th, 2024

Happy Friday Ledgers,

A Haunting in Lincoln

It’s just after 7:00 on a gloomy Friday night. Pink Pony Club hums through the speakers as I pass through downtown Lincoln. Suddenly, the music cuts out. CarPlay flickers, and the radio snaps on.

“You’re listening to Froggy 98.”

Weird. I reach to switch it back, but static floods the car.

“This is Greg Sharpe, joined by Damon Benning as Nebraska takes on Indiana on the road…”

I hit mute in horror, but the radio crackles back to life.

“…and Raiola throws a pick-six,” Greg’s voice drones like a funeral bell.

I slam the dashboard. Lightning crackles in the distance, and storm clouds gather overhead, dark and heavy.

My headlights catch something up ahead—a abnormally large, 8-foot boy in red-overalls and a vacant stare, standing in the road. I slam the brakes, heart racing. He stares with a sinister smile, then vanishes into the night.

“…Nebraska loses to yet another top 25 team…”

My hands shake as I catch my breath. Then, instintively, I glance in the rearview mirror—and freeze. Staring back at me is Herbie Husker. Not the friendly one I grew up with—this is the new one, with his blonde hair and unsettling grin, his eyes locked onto mine.

I whip around. Nothing in the back seat. The radio blares again.

“…Nebraska loses…”

I floor the gas, swerving through Lincoln, but every turn loops me back. The storm rages. Herbie grins wider, mocking me, as the radio drones on.

“…Nebraska loses. Nebraska loses. Nebraska loses.”

The phrase loops over and over, louder each time. My head pounds as I find myself driving, lost in an endless series of Lincoln roundabouts, trapped in the nightmare of Saturdays gone wrong.

Well, it looks like, yet again, we’ve all drank a bit too much of the Kool-Aid. Sports are pain… ❤️‍🩹

WHAT TO DO

Creepy tunnels, Boo at the Zoo, and brunch. 🙀

We’re shaking in our stinky little boots, gearing up for a very spooky weekend ahead.

💦 Haunted Tunnel + Nightmares
Kick off your Friday night by rolling through Jet Splash’s 5th Annual Haunted Tunnel—a car wash with a creepy twist. Afterward, head to White Elm Brewery for Nightmare on White Elm Street. There will be BBQ, live music, and, of course, craft beer to wrap up Lincoln Craft Brew Week.

🐒 Boo at the Zoo
After last weekend’s football heartbreak, you’ll be pretending to ignore the Ohio State game (but let’s be real, you’ll check the score with one eye closed). Saturday is dedicated to Boo at the Zoo, where Lincoln transforms into a scene straight out of a Disney Channel Halloween movie. Snag your tickets fast—this event is a hit every year. Luckily, if you miss it, it runs through next week, so you’ve got options.

🍁 Fall Cleanup and Basketball
Start your morning by washing down those 37 fun-size candy bars from last night with a much-needed coffee and a refreshing mimosa. Head to Piedmont Bistro for brunch with a friend—we recommend the eggs benedict to kick off your Sunday the right way. It’s the perfect reset before diving into the rest of your weekend plans.

After brunch, you’ve got some options:

  1. Be a contributing member to society and help cleanup at Holmes Lake from 1:00 PM -3:00 PM.

  2. Go watch a double dose of Nebraska Basketball.

  3. Find the heaviest blanket you can, sit on your couch, and rot for the afternoon while watching some prime Halloween classics.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

El hermoso atrio 😍

An unexpected trip to the hills of Spain—right here in the heart of the Huntington Neighborhood. We’re completely smitten with this Mediterranean beauty, a home that wraps itself around the crown jewel of its design: a stunning central courtyard. With its winding layout and focus on outdoor living, this house brings the warmth and charm of a European villa to the Midwest.

But let’s dive into the real highlight—your personal resort. The expansive entertainment area features a covered, year-round indoor pool that’s currently moonlighting as the ultimate play zone. A sleek, movable glass wall separates this space from the media room, where a curved wet bar awaits your next cocktail hour (on-call bartender, anyone?). This home exudes “staycation mode,” offering luxury and relaxation without ever leaving your front door.

The Details:

  • 3 beds, 3 baths

  • 3,716 sq/ft

  • Built in 1978

  • An incredible vintage truck

❤️ KEEP: The curved bar, the atrium that serves as your personal slice of Mediterranean heaven all-year round, the beautiful exterior stone finish, the tile roof, the uniquely shaped fireplace, and the inviting courtyard that anchors it all.

🗑️ TOSS: Some of the flooring (they’re ready for an upgrade), the kitchen cabinets could use a refresh, and let’s replace the carpet with something like a larger knit weave for a softer, more modern feel.

CHECKLIST

An over-ambitious weekend to-do list.

  • Make a last-second trip to Spirit Halloween and some rash cream for your polyester prison.

  • Grab some candy while you are out and about.

  • Pick up a new space heater for winter. We love infrared heaters, which are more energy-efficient.

  • Schedule a carpet cleaning appointment.
