Beer me. 🍻

The Lincoln Ledger: April 12th, 2024

Happy Friday Ledgers,

TODAY WILL BE 70 AND SUNNY.

WE REPEAT: TODAY WILL BE 70 AND SUNNY. FEEL THE S.A.D. EVAPORATING FROM YOUR BODY.

In this week’s issue:

  • Boozy Ballpark: Beer may make its way to Haymarket Park after all.

  • Cancer Center: April Sampson Cancer Center set to open in Lincoln.

  • What To Do: Vinyl Bar, very Mean Girls, and vegan pastries.

  • Sportz: Punt. Kick. Boot.

  • Neighborhood Watch: Tu-dor, or t-dorn’t. 🗡️

Happy Friday, we hope you enjoy this week’s post-lunch edition of TLL. As a wise man once told me, “May your chicken salad sandwich carry you through the day with a good source of protein, plenty of energy, and no unexpected trips to the restroom.”

Thanks for hanging out today,

- Landon

BOOZY BALLPARK

Me bringing beers back before the next inning^

Beer + Haymarket Park 🤝

Peanut butter and jelly, Hall and Oates, 27th Street and stop lights: all things that simply aren’t the same without the presence of the other. And after next week, we may be able to add one more — beer and baseball at Haymarket Park. After a short period of doubt, we are closer to having a cold one at Haymarket Park than originally thought.

Following a tumultuous period of negotiations between the University of Nebraska and NEBCO, which owns the Lincoln Saltdogs — both sides have now agreed to a revenue split from beer sales. The next stop for the proposal is the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, which will vote next week.

An inevitable trend… The University of Nebraska has, in recent years, been trending toward a more alcohol-friendly future, receiving approvals for the sale of alcohol at basketball games and as part of Memorial Stadium’s Volleyball Day last fall. Baseball and softball feel like a natural next step in a journey that ends with the Husker fans sipping their Busch Light in open air, rather than from a flask under the cover of a Runza wrapper in Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska is not alone… This is a growing trend across major universities, which are trying to diversify revenue streams for programs that are typically not profitable. An Associated Press survey from 2023 of Power Five conference schools and Notre Dame showed that 80% now sell alcohol on game days.

CANCER CENTER

April Sampson Cancer Center. 💜

At first glance, a new healthcare center may not seem like a big deal. But, if you’re among the many families with a loved one in treatment for cancer, you’ll undoubtedly understand just why the new April Sampson Cancer Center is such a big deal.

Scattered care… Before, cancer care in Lincoln required patients to visit separate facilities across town and endure delays when scheduling appointments. Now, with the consolidation of top doctors and specialists in one location, the center promises to enhance access to care and expedite treatment, revolutionizing the local approach to oncology.

Open for business… The center, a joint venture between Cancer Partners of Nebraska and Bryan Health, partially opened in late March. If you want to tour it, you’ll have your chance tomorrow at their open House from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Here are the directions.

The namesake… The facility is named after April Sampson of the Sampson Construction Family, who passed away at the age of 66 following a battle with breast cancer. The family donated 29 acres of land for the facility, and served as the construction company on the project.

🔢 By the numbers:

  • 9,000 cancer patients across Lancaster, Gage, Saline, and Seward counties

  • $45M facility

  • 140,000 square feet

📌 Why it matters:
Delays in cancer treatment directly impact cancer patient health outcomes. Any opportunities to consolidate care and improve efficiency can translate to better treatment results.

Additionally, going to one facility where patients can schedule appointments with multiple disciplines simultaneously can decrease the mental burden of getting into an appointment and help patients focus on what matters—getting better.

WHAT TO DO

Mean Girls Smile GIF by filmeditor

Vinyl Bar, very Mean Girls, and vegan pastries. 🥐

From the weather to the activities, it will be a lovely weekend.

🍹 Happy Hour at Vinyl Bar
Tonight, we’re embracing warm weather with some cocktails. We’ll try the new Vinyl Bar on the backside of Fleetwood in the Haymarket. For a summer vibe, we recommend the “Days Go By” with blanco tequila, orange saccharum, orange juice, and a splash of grenadine.

💁🏼‍♀️ Very Mean Girls
Saturday is for the girl gang. We’re grabbing last-second tickets to Mean Girls at the Lied. The matinee is the move, so you and the squad can go out for dinner afterward. For those not feeling the guttural scream of Regina George, they can check out Pro Bull Riding at PBA that evening. 🤠
GET TICKETS

☕️ A lovely morning in Prescott.
Sunday, we’re taking a mid-morning excursion to Prescott. We’ll pick up pastries from Goldenrod Pastries and coffee from The Mill. Afterward, we’ll stop into the cute shops in the area, like Paper Kite, and the life-giving Licorice International Store. You’ll start by saying, “We don’t need anything from there,” and an hour later, leave with two bags stuffed with artisanal candles and Australian licorice (what are those Aussies putting in that stuff??).

SPORTZ

A roundup of sports headlines.

  • 🏈 Football: Former Husker Football coach Frank Solich attended practice yesterday.

  • ⛳️ Masters: It’s happening. You can watch it at Longwell’s if your couch gets lonely.

  • 🥎 Softball: NU suffers two more season-ending injuries.

  • ⚾️ Baseball: Huskers play at Rutgers in a triple header this weekend.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Tu-dor, or t-dorn’t. 🗡️

Like a three-legged dog available for adoption, Tudor renovations are best suited for those with the patience, energy, and appreciation for their style. They’re difficult but in the best way. If this seems appealing to you — we’d like to introduce you to your new home.

Located on the corner of 27th and Van Dorn sits this beautiful Tudor, which we can be guaranteed you’ve driven by at some point. With endless rooms to explore and what appears to be a bonus attic area, you’ll have to buy walkie-talkies to find your spouse.

This is how we envision you spending your time in this home:

  • You’ll lounge around in your study while the sounds of French records dance through the halls.

  • Your spouse will get into wine and regale friends over dinner with tales of the grapes’ origin and climate (we’re getting hints of stone fruit).

  • You’ll dive headfirst into homesteading and spend the next 12 weeks bringing up your sourdough starter whenever you can in conversation.

  • Your spouse will get a bit too into the wine thing, and we’ll have an uncomfortable conversation after hosting Jeremy’s birthday, where we’ll remind them that “not everyone cares about the easterly wind and its impacts on grape acidity”.

❤️ KEEP: The exterior, the parquet wood flooring, as much of the molding and millwork as you can, the radiators (for the charm), the industrial-sized range, and, if possible, keep the beautiful windows.

🗑️ TOSS: The popcorn ceiling, most of the light fixtures, the bonus room carpet, all of the window dressings, the sunroom tile, and consider a full toss of the kitchen.

The Details:

  • 5 beds, 3 baths

  • 3,128 sq/ft

  • Built in 1925

  • The white noise of 27th street traffic lulling you to sleep

CHECKLIST

Your weekend checklist.

  • 😶‍🌫️ Give your shower a proper cleaning.

  • 💩 Scoop the dog poo in the yard (or negotiate with your spouse to do it).

  • 🤰 Jot down a few ideas for Mother’s Day gifts or activities.

  • 🤧 Load up on allergy medicine.

  • 📆 Add wedding invite dates to your calendar.

  • 🚲 Pump up your bike tires and put some lubricant on the chain.

🐻 WEEKLY WILDCARD (a headline we never saw coming)
