The Lincoln Ledger: May 31st, 2024
Happy Friday Ledgers,
This afternoon, Husker baseball takes on the Florida Gators in their journey to return to the College World Series. Will it be a dream come true? Or will we fall to our old rival after an amazing run in the Big Ten Tournament? Only time will tell.
Luckily, you don’t have to wait to know. The game is going on right now (we’re currently down 1-3). Here’s where to watch.
In this week’s issue:
Electric Bus: Lincoln Public Schools receive funding for electric buses.
Airport: The Lincoln Airport renovation project is officially complete.
What To Do: A bit of this, a bit of that.
Sportz: Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
Neighborhood Watch: The perfect Spanish bungalow.
April showers bring May flowers. May showers bring down all the trees in your neighborhood, one by one, until you’ve met your insurance deductible.

Last Week’s Poll Results:

(A resounding yes. Big things ahead for L-town 🙌)
ELECTRIC BUS
Electric buses will soon be transporting your children. 🚍
Imagine this: You and your kiddo walking hand in hand to the bus stop. You bend down and give them a tiny kiss on the head. When you look back up, a school bus has magically appeared. The only sound uttered is that of the hydraulic suspension as it lowers the bus to help your little one jump on. The doors close and you watch as they are whisked away with nothing more than the slightest hum of an electric motor.
Sound far-fetched? Well, it could be happening in Lincoln soon.
Earlier this week, Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) received $815k in grant funding through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Bus Program to purchase electric school buses and retire some of the old diesel giants. The funding will cover three new buses and the installation of charging stations designed for large electric vehicles.
Why electric school buses make sense:
Pre-determined routes: Buses follow fixed and predictable routes.
Moderate speeds in town: Ideal for electric vehicle efficiency.
Schedules that accommodate charging: There’s plenty of time to charge between usage.
While LPS hasn’t shared when they plan to purchase the new buses, it's exciting to see the school district embrace new transportation tech. Bonus: You’ll have plenty to talk about with your Boomer parents when they complain about how we shouldn’t trust electric vehicles whenever they help walk the kiddos to the bus stop.
So, keep an eye (and an ear) out—the future of school transportation in Lincoln might glide quietly down your street.
AIRPORT RENOVATION
The LNK renovation is done. Where are the flights? ✈️
The Lincoln Airport renovation project has officially wrapped up, and from what we’ve seen so far, it looks pretty amazing. Yesterday marked the ribbon-cutting ceremony, exactly one year after the updated terminal opened.
The fully renovated airport boasts:
Revamped check-in counter.
New car rental kiosks.
Executive offices (where we imagine airport officials tirelessly strategizing their next airline pursuit).
Terminal with improved seating, food, and security screening area (which was completed last year).
With the project complete, only one question remains: how will LNK improve flight routes? As covered back in January, United Airlines (the sole airline operating out of LNK) dropped its nonstop route to Houston—leaving Denver and Chicago as the only remaining route options. While hopeful, for now LNK officials say it is going to take some time to find a new carrier.
The bright side… At least for now we can jet off to two cities from a beautifully upgraded airport that truly reflects the charm of Lincoln.

WHAT TO DO
A bit of this, a bit of that.
You’re show off your many layers this weekend 🧅. You’ll start punk AF and end with some R&R.
🤘 A Metal Farewell
Bid farewell to one of Lincoln’s favorite breweries, Cosmic Eye. Tomorrow is officially their last day open, but tonight they’re going out with a bang as they host the Cosmic Eye Farewell Show (starting at 7:00 PM). If metal is too much for your wimpy little ears, a Steely Dan and Grateful Dead tribute band is playing downtown. Farewell Dead Man’s Run, you will be missed. 😢
🤠 Auctions and Whiskey
On Saturday, that's right, on Saturday it's auction day, bidda-bidda-bidda, yessir, don't miss it now, going once, going twice, sold! Pack your belt buckle & wads of cash, you’re going to the LPD Abandoned/Unclaimed Vehicle and Bicycle Auction. You don’t have to buy anything, but trust us, you’ll have a blast and likely get sucked into almost buying a 2003 Toyota Corolla because really, it’s too good of a deal to pass up.
Afterward, you’ll head to the Nebraska Whiskey Carnivale, hosted by Sideshow Spirits. You’ll taste whiskey from the top distilleries across Nebraska, listen to live music, and grab food from a host of food trucks. Tickets are limited and only for sale for a few more hours, so be sure to get them ASAP.
⛈️ Rainy Sunday
Sunday will be a bit rainy. Recover from your whiskey hangover and enjoy the day from the comfort of your home. Of course, you’ll make an exception to grab donuts from Lamar’s, Modo, or Hurts Donut.
🎺 Bonus: Jazz in June is Back
Next Tuesday (June 4th) is the kickoff of Jazz in June. Held in the sculpture garden next to The Sheldon on the UNL Campus, it is a quintessential part of summer in Lincoln, so be sure to mark it on the calendar.
SPORTZ
Always dreaming bigger.
@jcook2 has been extended through the 2028 season.
