S’CUTE

Lincoln Children’s Zoo welcomes new baby penguin. 🐧

When A-List celebrities have babies, the people listen. Beyoncé and Jay Z, Kim and Kanye, Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner, and now we can add Lincoln royalty to the list: John Henry (copyright 2024) and Sharkbait.

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo announced the arrival of a new Humboldt penguin chick earlier this week. The penguins have reportedly had several unsuccessful attempts to bring a baby penguin into the world.

A vulnerable population… Humboldt penguins, which are classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, face a high risk of extinction. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan Program, which aims to maintain a genetically diverse, demographically varied, and biologically sound population of these penguins, according to zoo officials.

A naming rights bidding war?… Zoo officials have yet to announce a name for the chick. Our bet is that they are holding out for the conclusion of a bidding war between local businesses eager to secure the naming rights.

What should they name the baby penguin?

Calling all Lincoln Farmers and Marathoners. 📣

The weather.com app (in which we trust 🙌) says the weather will be a bit scattered in terms of cloud coverage but should be good for a weekend filled with outdoor activities.

🎤 Lincoln Calling and ‘Za.
Tonight is for music and pizza. It’s the kickoff of the 20th annual Lincoln Calling music festival. You’ll do happy hour at Yia Yia’s and grab an early dinner there before making your way over to the festival right down the street.

🍅 Haymarket Farmers’ Market
You’ll start Saturday morning a bit early. Toss on something cute, grab a few tote bags, and head downtown. Skip the coffee at home, you’re grabbing the first bit of caffeine at Crescent Moon or The Mill. We’ll hang for a few before making our way to the first weekend of the Haymarket Farmers’ Market. You’ll browse the produce and grab some groceries for the week; however, make no mistake, we are here for the snacks.

🏃‍♀️ Lincoln Marathon
Sunday marks the annual Lincoln Marathon, which for one day a year, turns traffic into a gridlocked hell-storm. That’s why this year, you’ve embraced the idea of “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” You’ll head to one of the spectating locations and play your part in the contagiously positive event. Cheer on a friend or be the hype man for some randos. The race is from 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Here’s the map of the event. 👈

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Secret acreage. 🤫

Occasionally, we come across a listing that feels almost too good to be true: a sprawling three-acre city lot shielded from traffic and noise. It’s the type of property that’s only possible when the house is built before the city surrounds it. With great materials, this home provides the opportunity to do something incredibly unique.

The Details:

  • 6 beds, 6 baths

  • 3 acres

  • Built in 1969

  • A pond to keep your spirit light.

❤️ KEEP: The long driveway, the vaulted ceilings, the water feature in the back, the trees, the four seasons room, the indoor hot tub, the green tiled ceiling in the bonus room (seriously love).

🗑️ TOSS: The cherry wood (unless you find a way to mute it down), the tile in the basement, and some of the current wallpaper.

🖼️ THE STYLE: British Tudor Moody Estate
We asked TLL contributor and all-around stylish friend Garrett Schwindt to redesign this tudor. Check out his mood board and breakdown for how to update this property. 👇

“With nearly 8,000 square feet to play with, this home has so much potential to create incredible spaces to share with family and friends. The current elements feel reminiscent of British Tudor grandeur, but held back by 70’s execution. If given free rein to bring this estate up to par, I would lean in hard on things like patterns, textures, color, and textiles, and bespoke fixtures.

What I wanted to collect for inspiration on this Pinterest board was evidence that leaning into the character of each element can lead to feeling collected over time, as opposed to being heavily curated to look a certain way. People can sniff out a phony in 16th-century ruffled collars, so with some key changes I’m confident you can walk into this home that truly embraces its British inspiration.”
