The Lincoln Ledger: April 5th, 2024

Happy Friday Ledgers,

Nothing good ever happened while interest rates were high.

A financial pundit somewhere

We disagree. Our sole point of evidence is this week’s announcement that the lot formerly occupied by Haymarket favorite Melichar 66 Sales and Services (the gas station) may be converted temporarily into a sodded lot with picnic tables for Lincoln residents while Lincoln Bold developers wait for more favorable interest rates.

And on that flawless argument, we rest our case. 👩‍⚖️

In this week’s issue:

  • Brunza: A new heir to the breakfast throne.

  • Logo: The City of Lincoln releases a new logo.

  • What To Do: Pioneers Park, The Sheldon, and treasure hunting.

  • Sportz: Mostly a bunch of ways to hit different-sized sporting balls.

  • Neighborhood Watch: Little house with a magic trick. 🪄

If you can get off early today, do it (go right now). It will be a beautiful evening to kick off the first weekend of April.

Have a great weekend, 🫡

BRUNZA

Breakfast Runza stops traffic and melts hearts. 🥰

If you were amongst the poor souls who decided on Wednesday morning to go anywhere near 56th and Holdrege St., you would have been greeted with an unwelcome surprise—traffic, and lots of it. Block after block, car after car, all filled with hungry breakfast seekers hoping to get their shot at a coveted Breakfast Runza.

After years of online bullying, Runza Rex finally caved into our deepest craving: a steamy Runza shell filled with eggs, gravy, ham, and melted cheese. The downside? The sandwich would be available for one day only. A cruel reminder that so much of the world is out of our control. But it was good while it lasted. 💔

Will it ever make a full-time appearance?… Currently, Runza has no intention of changing its hours to accommodate breakfast service or making Breakfast Runzas a regular part of the menu. Instead, its release helped raise funds for Runza’s Feed The Need Campaign, which benefits youth hunger and food insecurity in Runza communities.

Breakfast GOATs… While its run was short, we think it is safe to say the breakfast runza is a future contender for the fast-food breakfast hall of fame, joining the company of other elite breakfast eats such as Casey’s Breakfast Pizza and the McDonald’s Sausage & Egg McMuffin (a personal favorite).

NEW LOGO

A logo for the people.

Few things divide people like a new logo. Designs that seemed brilliant in a boardroom presentation are released into the wild and served as bait for hungry internet trolls fueled by the prospect of meme glory. Gone wrong, months of hard work can be ruined in minutes. When done right, like in the case of the City of Lincoln flag, they can be a signal for progress and a town on the rise.

For the brave few who proceed with a redesign, there are a few key things to know:

  1. Logo design is a war of attrition… Rarely will you have a smashing success that is met with immediate love from the public and stands the test of time. In many cases, you have to choose one.

  2. In most cases, people won’t care as much as you do… You should be excited about your design if you’ve done a great job. But don’t expect this from others.

  3. Government entities draw even more scrutiny… Like most things, when there is politics or government involved, people tend to have even stronger reactions. Items (1) and (2) above can be amplified in these cases.

So what changed?… Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird unveiled a new logo system for the City of Lincoln and its many departments. The 8-point star logo features a different color for each city department to help residents better differentiate them at a glance.

📌 Why it matters… Between city vehicles, social media accounts, and other communications, it can be difficult to understand which department you’re looking at. This can be critical for departments like the police department or the LTU Department — which have many vehicles across the city that may need to go into otherwise non-trafficked areas (think the ditch in someone’s backyard) and should be identifiable to the public.

“The logo includes an eight-pointed star, with different colors to represent the City’s multifacetedness and inclusivity, where every person, community and City department has a place and a vital role”

One question… We won’t sway your opinion on the logo's design. However, at TLL, we do have a burning question. After the immense success of the City of Lincoln flag design (by local creative Ed Mejia), why not leverage that design identity for city purposes rather than add a new one?

If you have the answer, hit us up. 📧

WHAT TO DO

Pioneers Park, The Sheldon, and treasure hunting.

With scattered spring weather this weekend, we’ll do our outdoor activities after work tonight and plan to avoid the rainy weather on Saturday.

  • 🌳 Picnic at Pioneers Park.
Tonight, we’re decompressing from a long week with a last-second picnic at Pioneers Park. Invite a few friends and plan to meet up around 5:45. Don’t overthink it — throw whatever snacks you have in a basket, grab a blanket and maybe a sweatshirt for good measure, and head on over. Bonus points to anyone who brings the frisbee. 🥏

  • 🖼️ Saturday Afternoon at the Sheldon.
On Saturday morning, we’ll wake up slowly with a book or a little Pinterest scrolling. Plan to grab lunch downtown in Lincoln before heading to The Sheldon Museum of Art for a few hours to browse the art and enjoy some intentional quiet.

  • 🔎 Sunday Treasure Hunt
We’re going in search of unique household treasures on Sunday. From quirky art pieces to interesting furniture and decorations, we’ll spend the day browsing some of Lincoln’s best antique stores. Stay caffeinated, fed, and hydrated — it can be a long day. Here are a few of our favorite spots in Lincoln:

SPORTZ

A roundup of sports headlines.

  • 🏀 Basketball: Keisei Tominaga won the 3-point championship in style.

  • 🏆 Coach: Fred Hoiberg was named Division I coach of the year.

  • 🏐 Volleyball: The UNL volleyball spring game sold out in 46 minutes.

  • 🏅 Team USA Volleyball: Five NU volleyball players have been invited to try out for the U.S. Under 21 team.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Little house with a magic trick.

Nestled away off of 40th Street awaits this adorable brick home with a magic trick up its sleeve. At first glance, it appears to be a tiny home covered in ivy and decorated in nostalgia. But take another look (and ten steps to the side), and the rest of the home begins to emerge — all 2,600 square feet.

In this quaint home, you can have the best of both worlds: the charm and comfort of a historic build and the extra space to do all the activities that the real world requires of us. You can have your cake and bake it, too (in an updated kitchen where you won’t bump into your partner).

And don’t even get us started on the garage. With a touch of carriage house, this garage will have you considering purchasing a classic car. We think a 1966 Austin Healy 3000 fits the bill here.

❤️ KEEP: The original hardwoods, the deck, the tiny bedrooms on the second floor, the stained glass window in the stairwell, the garage (don’t you dare touch this garage), and controversially, some of the ivy on the chimney (but cut it off in other areas to avoid invasive growth).

🗑️ TOSS: The newer LVT floors (not the vibe), the barn doors in the kitchen and the hallway, and possibly the tile in the addition (TBD on this one).

🎨 THE LOOK: The vibe is Moody English Countryside Quirky Academia. Most of our work here will be interior, so let’s dive in. In the bedrooms, we’ll explore a moody palette. We’ll also consider bringing a similar brick color as the exterior, inside the home as a flooring option for entryways and other high-traffic areas. Finally, we’ll go on the hunt for quirky and fun art pieces that help to complete the look.

The Details:

  • 4 beds, 3 baths

  • 2,625 sq/ft

  • Built in 1925

  • Enough charm to make you want to cry. 🥹

CHECKLIST

The semi-ambitious persons’ checklist.
