The Lincoln Ledger: December 20th, 2024

Happy Friday Ledgers,

Good news—Nebraska is growing. The Cornhusker State is experiencing its fastest population growth in three decades. As of July, newly released census data estimates the state’s population at 2,005,465 with an annual growth rate of 0.88%, making us the 17th fastest-growing state in the country.

The driving force? International immigration, which accounted for nearly 13,000 of the 17,601 new residents—more than double the increase from the previous year. And, because we like starting the weekend on a positive note: Nebraskan births outpaced deaths last year, adding 6,000 new Nebraskans.

In this week’s issue:

  • Jersey: Jersey Guy

  • What To Do: Holiday warm-up

  • Sportz: Eight days till we’re reunited with bowl games 😍

  • Neighborhood Watch: Tall girl 🪜

JERSEY

The Jersey Guy 👑

There are countless ways to show your love as a sports fan. Maybe it’s a car adorned with a glittering vanity license plate (GOSKRS). Or for the truly committed, a mascot tattoo affixed to the ol’ gluteus maximus. But when it comes to the ultimate symbol of loyalty, nothing beats the classic jersey—and if jersey ownership equals sports devotion, one UNL student just claimed the crown.

What Happened?.. Enter Maxwell Anderson, aka Jersey Guy, a Nebraska student whose sartorial streak earned him internet fame this semester. Sitting front and center in his geography class, Anderson wore a different jersey every day. His dedication didn’t go unnoticed—his classmate, known as Big Red Dave on X, began documenting Anderson’s daily drip, complete with photos and commentary. The posts quickly gained a loyal following.

The saga reached its peak when a TikTok about Jersey Guy went viral. In a shocking twist, the streak ended when Anderson attended class without a jersey, breaking the hearts of his newfound fans.

The Alley-Oop from Fanatics…. Like any good brand waiting to dunk on an opportunity, Fanatics was ready and waiting. The sports apparel giant gifted Anderson 60 new jerseys, boosting his collection to over 160 pieces of sportswear glory. Now, the self-proclaimed Jersey King has enough to keep the streak alive for future semesters. Our question only is, can he add enough to graduate without repeating a single outfit?..

WHAT TO DO

The holiday warm-up

⛸️ Ice Skating
Okay ice princess, let’s see what you got. This weekend, you’ll break out those trusty skates and take them to the rink at the John Breslow Hockey Center. Take someone special, or whoever is the biggest fan of The Mighty Ducks (we all know D2 is the superior film in this franchise). We are particularly interested in the “Holiday-Themed Cosmic Skate” tonight and tomorrow starting at 7:30 PM.

🎤 New age caroling
We’ll skip on the caroling this year and instead get our dose of Christmas music Saturday night from one of two venues. For those who prefer the comfort of a theatre seat, check out The Midtown Men’s holiday special at the Lied. For something a bit more intimate, we’d highly recommend checking out Andrea Van Kampen, who will be playing on The Rooftop of Bierhaus Maisschäler on Saturday afternoon.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Tall girl. 🪜

Cute exterior? Check. Cathedral ceilings? Check. All-seasons sunroom? Check. Downstairs barbecue? Surprisingly…yes, that’s also a check. 🍖

At first glance, 4621 A Street might seem like another charming brick home tucked into Lincoln’s Tudor Revival lineup. But step inside and you’ll quickly realize this one’s got a little extra swagger—four stories of space, nearly an acre of land to stretch out on, and enough character to make it stand out in all the best ways.

Built in 1932 by Charles Ammon, the former CEO of the Cushman Motor Company, this home has a history of making statements. And with three separate workshops, it’s practically begging for someone to roll up their sleeves - literally. Whether you’re into woodworking, restoring classic motorcycles (a nod to Cushman’s heyday), or just having plenty of room to tinker, this place has you covered.

The Details:

  • 6 beds, 3 baths

  • 4,638 sq/ft

  • Built in 1932

  • An indoor balcony straight out of a teenage boy’s dreams

❤️ KEEP: The cathedral ceilings (they’re tall for a reason), the sunroom (though the floors need a little help), the woven bathroom tile that’s timeless and playful, the double driveways for functional charm, and the windows, which are a masterclass in natural light. Oh, and that bonus room? We’re here for it.

🗑️ TOSS: The kitchen—it’s ready for a complete upgrade. The basement flooring feels like it’s seen better days, the foyer wallpaper needs a refresh, and those wall AC units have overstayed their welcome. And while the backyard is spacious (a major win), it’s also a bit of an eyesore. A little landscaping love could transform it into something truly spectacular.

CHECKLIST

An over-ambitious weekend to-do list.

  • Hammer that one loose nail in your home (you know the one that you keep seeing and forget about)

  • Dust off your art pieces hanging on the wall

  • Rake the leaves again (hopefully for the final time, but somehow we doubt it)

  • Make a batch of cookies

  • Add a draft stopper to the bottom of your door
