The Lincoln Ledger: March 8th, 2024

Happy Friday, Ledgers.

There is officially only one more week of winter. So here’s a thought, why not lean into it? For at least today, try to enjoy the snap of cold air and the last tiny bit of snow — because it won’t be too long until we’re complaining about how humid Nebraska is. 🥵

A couple of spring reminders 🌷

  1. If you’re one of the pale individuals flocking to somewhere warm for spring break, have a great time. But, don’t forget to put on sunscreen. 🧴

  2. Daylight Savings is on Sunday, so stock up on caffeine to prep. ☕️

In this week’s issue:

  • Four Chairs. One Voice: Lincoln native wins over judges on The Voice.

  • Facebook: Facebook giveth, Facebook taketh away.

  • What To Do: Pizza night, hotel coffee, and Sunday bike rides.

  • Sportz: Just a bunch of sweaty individuals.

  • Neighborhood Watch: Downtown Dweller.

Whoops! 😅 Last week we asked for your top hashbrown joint recommendations. Afterward, we learned that the emails weren’t going through. No worries though, use the form below to add your top hashbrown spots to the list.

P.S. Give us all the details as to why they are the best.

THE VOICE

Four chairs. One voice. 🎤

Lincoln native Brian Olesen turned three out of four chairs this week on The Voice following a stirring rendition of “Love Runs Out” by One Republic. John Legend was the first of the judges to smash the oversized button and also received the distinction of being selected as Olesen’s coach for this season.

The one judge to hold out was Chance the Rapper, who gave Olesen not one singular Cocoa Butter Kiss, but we’ll forgive him this time because he gave us the sweet sounds of Acid Rap.

Controversy, oh my... The internet initially loved the performance, but it wasn’t long before Olesen sparked a little bit of controversy. Devout fans of the show claimed he should not be allowed to compete, as Olesen is a Grammy-nominated artist and was part of two well-known Christian music groups, Newsboys and VOTA.

☝️ Not the first Lincoln contestant… Hannah Huston was the original Lincoln contestant. She placed 3rd during Season 10 of The Voice in 2016. Here is a glimpse of her audition.

FACEBOOK

Facebook giveth, Facebook taketh away. ⚡️

Nebraska Through the Lens is a popular Facebook group that highlights the beauty of Nebraska through contributor photos. After browsing, I can confirm that is an all-around good vibe.

Since its creation in 2013, the page has built a devout following of almost 470k members. Which is why there was deep confusion and frustration when the page was abruptly taken offline last week due to alleged violations of Facebook's community standards on intellectual property. But if there’s one thing you can count on Facebook users for, it’s that they are not a quiet bunch.

Complaints began flooding in, even reaching the level of State Senators, who now apparently serve as Facebook moderators in their free time. However, after days of uncertainty and efforts to seek clarification from Meta (Facebook's parent company), the page was unexpectedly reinstated.

Here to stay?.. Despite its revival, questions remain unanswered regarding the initial takedown and subsequent restoration of Nebraska Through the Lens. This has left many users wondering, will this happen again?

WHAT TO DO

Pizza night, hotel coffee, and Sunday bike rides.

The weather will be a bit all over the place this weekend. Expect the cold to remain through tonight and sunny skies throughout the rest of the weekend.

  • 🍕 Choose Your Own Pizza Adventure
We’re eating pizza tonight, but it’s a choose-your-own-adventure. Feeling social? Head to Hub Café for Friday Night Pizza and Pints from (5-9 PM) for house-made pizzas and live music. Feeling anti-social? Order pizza from Vic’s Pizza, Ramos, or The Isles (Leaning Tower of Pizza supremacy) and watch an Oscar-nominated movie. Here’s a list of the nominees and where to watch them.

  • ☕️ Hotel Coffee and Spring Cleaning

Saturday is for your chores, but we’re doing it a bit differently this weekend. Wake up, grab your iPad (or magazine), get in the car, and go to The Scarlet Hotel for coffee. The lobby is a great spot to hang out and is open to the public. Stay for a bit, before working up the courage to go home and conquer your spring cleaning checklist.

  • 🚴‍♀️ Bike Rides and a Beer (or two)

Sunday afternoon will be in the 70’s, pump up those bike tires and hit the trails. Lincoln has tons of great trails to explore, but we recommend MoPac Trail East, which takes you out to Eagle, NE. When you get there, have a beer and a bite to eat at Bailey’s Local before heading back.

SPORTZ

A roundup of sports headlines.

  • ⛹️‍♀️ NCAAWB: Husker women's basketball beats Purdue in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament (64-56)

  • 🤸 Gymnastics: #5 Nebraska takes on #2 Illinois at the Devaney Center this weekend for Senior Day.

  • 🏃 Track and Field: Nebraska will compete in the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

  • 🤼 Wrestling: Husker men face off in the Big Ten Championships this weekend.

  • ⛹️ NCAAMB: Men’s basketball takes on Michigan this Sunday on the road.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Downtown Dweller.

No fixer-uppers this week. We’re going for this move-in-ready condo in the heart of downtown Lincoln.

Located at 14th and F Street this condo is perfectly suited for a solo dweller or family of two. This chic industrial condo balances its harder details like concrete floors and dry-fall ceilings, with warm wood accents and art that brings some more personality to the place. It also comes complete with its own parking space (which I’ve come to realize is one of my love languages.)

At just over $500k, this is a great buy for anyone looking to live in the downtown scene permanently.

❤️ KEEP: Honestly, keep most of this. 🤩

🗑️ TOSS: The wall fingers (you’ll lose an eye on one of those babies), and toss those notions that you can’t still enjoy a pitcher of Elk Creek Water after the age of 22 — store-bought orange juice ages like fine wine in an old plastic beer pitcher. 😙👌🏻

The Details:

  • 2 bed, 2 bath

  • 2,041 sq ft

  • Built in 2007

  • Some noisy neighbors 📢

CHECKLIST

Some other things to do this weekend. Maybe you’ll get to them, maybe not.

🧰 Organize your garage. Put all those tools in their spot.

🪭 Dust your ceiling fans.

🐱 Clean the litter box. Don’t forget that your cat tracks those poo paws around your home.

💳 Use that gift card that’s been chilling in your junk drawer.

🖼️ Hang up that photo or art that has been begging to go on the wall.

HEADLINES

More news from around the capital.

  • Mental Health: Lincoln becomes the first city in Nebraska to have 911/988 partnership for emergency and mental health hotlines.

  • Music City: Lincoln Calling announced its lineup for this year.

  • NIL: 10,000 athletes have signed up to be featured in EA Sports NCAA Football 2024 video game.

  • Small Houses: A Lincoln developer looks to build 65 “size-wise” (less than 900 sq ft) homes with an affordable price tag.

🐻 WEEKLY WILDCARD (a headline we never saw coming)

  • Parents got into a fight during the high school state basketball this week. Nothing makes the tensions run higher than 18-year-olds dribbling a basketball. 🥊
