Still breathing. 😮‍💨 - TLL Mini Edition

The Lincoln Ledger: June 7th, 2024

Happy National Donut Day, Ledgers,

While we are not usually a huge fan of arbitrary national days, this one leaves us feeling whole (or should we say donut hole). 😬

Here are a few of Lincoln’s most iconic donut places and what to order from each.

  • Lamar’s - Lincoln’s crown jewel | Blueberry cake donut

  • Randy’s Donuts - Local, delicious, underrated | Chocolate donut

  • Modo - Up-and-comer that’s perfectly sweet but not too sweet | Strawberry donut

In this week’s mini issue:

  • Not Dead: Lincoln woman transported to a funeral home was still alive.

  • What To Do: Wine, pride, and hot dog weather.

  • Sportz: See the ball. Be the ball.

  • Neighborhood Watch: Bush gardens.

Have a great weekend; you’ve earned it. And even if you didn’t earn it, enjoy it anyway. There will be another week where you’ve double-earned it.

OUR NIGHTMARE SCENARIO CAME TRUE.

“A very unusual case.”

Your worst nightmares have come true.

On Monday at 9:44 AM, Constance Glantz was declared dead. What followed, for someone in death care industry, would be considered standard operating procedure.

Constance’s passing was anticipated, a term indicating that she had been seen by a physician within the last week, and they were willing to sign the death certificate. Standard operating procedure.

The staff of The Mulberry, a small nursing home in Waverly, Nebraska, would call to have her transported to Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln when she passed. She would then be prepared for her final resting place. All standard operating procedures.

But as funeral staff placed her body on the examination table after her arrival, they discovered something not so standard. She was breathing.

What happened next… Lincoln emergency crews were called immediately and transported Constance to a hospital, where, several hours later, she would sadly pass away. The funeral home staff issued condolences to the family. The Mulberry went into hiding to avoid every journalist. And the LPD would hold a press conference in which Chief Deputy Ben Houchin would refer to this as “a very unusual case.”

International news… Like moths to a flame, journalists flocked to the story. From The Lincoln Journal Star to the BBC, the story caught fire, undoubtedly securing its spot as Lincoln's largest headline since the Runza breakfast sandwich was announced.

An investigation… There is currently an investigation into the incident, to-date no charges have been brought. More details are needed to understand what went wrong from a procedural perspective. Meanwhile, management of Butherus, Maser, and Love have praised staff for acting quickly to call authorities.

Not the first incident… While a first for Lincoln (that we know of), there have been other similar instances recently. Most notably, a woman in Iowa last year was found “gasping for air” after arriving at the funeral home.

WHAT TO DO

Wine, pride, and summer Americana.

🍷 Wineries and music
You’ll start tonight with a short trip to Junto Winery near Seward. Enjoy the summer evening with a glass of wine while listening to live music. Grab an adult grilled cheese from the food truck when the fifth glass of sangria takes full control of your prefrontal cortex. Music starts at 6:00 PM. And don’t forget the Lactaid.

🏳️‍🌈 Star City Pride Festival
Every day is a good day to celebrate our LGBTQIA2S+ community. But come Saturday, you’ll chant about it in a cute outfit from the steps of the Capitol building. This weekend is the Star City Pride Festival, and you’ll be there bright and early for the Pride Parade, which starts at 10:00 AM. Looking for more ways to celebrate? The festival runs Friday and Saturday, with a full roster of events.

⛈️ Hot Dog Weather (and baseball)
We’ll enjoy the weather on Sunday and spend a relaxing afternoon at the ballpark watching the Lincoln Salt Dogs as we warm up for the College World Series next weekend in Omaha. We’ll grab a glizzy, watch the game, and work on our base tan (read: sunburn) in the way only a nine-inning game allows.

SPORTZ

Sporting headlines from around the capital.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Bush gardens.

Beneath the brush lies a diamond in waiting. Spacious and private, this Tudor gives the sense of being a place where important work gets done; its many hideaways perfect for the aspiring writer, artist, or engineer to toil the day away uninterrupted.

And what’s more, we have a vision for this one. Well, rather, Tan France of Queer Eye had a vision for his recent Tudor project that has inspired us (to copy him). But hey, we don’t believe in recreating the wheel here. Especially when the wheel is so beautiful.

The Details:

  • 4 beds, 3 baths

  • 2,927 sq/ft

  • Built in 1920

  • More foliage than home.

❤️ KEEP: The exterior, front door, the fireplace tile, the sunroom, the bonus space, and the back patio perfect for relaxing.

🗑️ TOSS: The clippings from the hedges after they’ve been trimmed, the carpet upstairs/downstairs, the wood floor tone (let’s go darker here), the kitchen (we’re ready for an update).

CHECKLIST

An over-ambitious weekend to-do list.

  • Pick up some fresh flowers for your home.

  • Clean off your bike chain and put some new lubricant on it.

  • Open your personal email and hit unsubscribe to all those marketing emails (obviously not TLL though, we’d be devastated).

  • Drop off your old books for someone else to enjoy. But only the ones you feel people would enjoy… Here’s where to donate.
