Windier City 💨

The Lincoln Ledger: August 2nd, 2024

Happy Friday Ledgers,

In Memoriam: The Trees of Lincoln

This week we laid to eternal rest some of Lincoln's trees, enough to fill a forest. Those stoic giants who managed to avoid city planners and eager chainsaws for decades & fresh little saplings with big, beautiful dreams, were finally toppled by 80 mph winds. Their shade and serenity will be sorely missed by birds, squirrels, and humans alike.

In celebration of their lives, we honor them with passionate pyres this weekend, pouring one out as bonfires burn across the city’s landscape.

In this week’s issue:

  • Stormy: Lincoln’s power outage.

  • Commercial: An iconic commercial gets an update.

  • What To Do: Super Fair and football practice.

  • Sportz: Go for the gold!

  • Neighborhood Watch: 70s swinger’s paradise.

While it may be August, don't let the summer scaries get you down. School might be around the corner, but summer lasts until the end of September, so there’s plenty of warm weather still to enjoy. 🌞

STORMS

The windier city 💨

On Wednesday, 30,000 residents across Lincoln were left in the dark with only the faint glow of their phones to light the way. The cause? A storm with winds strong enough to lure the likes of Glen Powell like a tornado-chasing mouse to cheese.

With winds topping 80mph, the storm worked its way through Lincoln, downing over 500 trees in the process and undoubtedly causing insurance adjusters to cry. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured.

More than trees… Lincoln also lost power to all 44 of its wells located in Ashland, NE, as a result of damage to Omaha Public Power District’s system. This led to a temporary self-imposed water restriction from the city before the system power could be restored. By late Thursday afternoon, power had been restored to the well fields, and 48 hours after the storm, 91% of residents power had their power restored.

📌 Why it matters
Community resilience is defined by how quickly, after a major event (storm or other), a community can get back to normal and grow stronger.

COUNTDOWN

An iconic commercial, updated. 🗺️

There are some commercials so legendary that they take on a life bigger than the products they represent. Here’s a quick list that comes to mind:

If you are a college football fan, there is one more commercial that fits the bill… The Big Ten Map Commercial. Earlier today, a new version of the commercial was released as we head into the final few weeks ahead of college football season.

New teams, new places… The commercial has been updated to commemorate the new Big Ten entrants: Washington, Oregon, UCLA, and USC. It builds on the original, expanding the map to the West Coast while retaining the character of the original.

Modern nostalgia… It is no exaggeration to say that this commercial is a truly loved piece of the game day experience. Simple, yet effective—it highlights every college in seconds while the catchy “Silver Linings” plays in the background. It’s a small piece of the puzzle, but one best built on rather than changed.

Is this one of the best commercials ever made

WHAT TO DO

State Fair GIF by State Fair of Texas

Super Fair and football practice.

🚜 Lancaster County Super Fair
Tonight, we’ll go watch tractors pull a sled with progressively more resistance to determine a winner. That’s right, it’s fair night in Lincoln. Head over after work and catch the tractor pull. Go with friends or take your nephew who loves "twactors.” What distinguishes a regular-degular fair from a Super Fair you ask? Bigger crowds, bigger rides, & (hopefully) bigger corndogs.

🏈 Husker Football Big Red Preview
If you’ve been counting down the days until Husker football season, here’s your chance! From the time this message was sent, you have approximately one hour left to purchase tickets for tomorrow’s open practice at Memorial Stadium. Ticket sales end at 5:00 p.m.

Event Details: Gates open at 5:30 PM, with practice starting at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $25 each and will be mobile-only.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

70’s Swinger’s Paradise 🍍

With 70’s swagger oozing from every surface and what can be assumed is a scent that gives hints of tobacco and musk, this home is packed with some of the most interesting features we’ve encountered on TLL. A quick browse of the Zillow listing will reveal the following: a rocky interior foyer, dramatic wooden framing, stained glass accent lighting, rock exterior accents, a curved brick kitchen island, a step-down tub, rock-covered mantles across multiple hearths, an angular floating metal fireplace and - did we mention - a sh*t ton of rocks.

While some of the charms of this 70’s design may make us do a double take (we’re looking at you, carpeted bathrooms), this home is absolutely incredible. The layout gives you tons to work with, the lake views give you a living body of art just outside your windows, and the unique character means that your guests will never forget a stay at your home.

The Details:

  • 2 beds, 3 baths

  • 2,882 sq/ft

  • Built in 1974

  • Enough stone to ensure your phone never gets service.

❤️ KEEP: The fireplaces, the layout, the wood panel ceiling, the staircase design, the stained glass accent lighting near the kitchen, and maybe some of the cork wall paneling.

🗑️ TOSS: The carpeted everything, the primary bath (which is mostly giving “pioneer chic”), the shingles inside the home, and the kitchen.

One more thought: Should you purchase this one, you’ll need to get creative to claim back some of the awkward space behind furniture in rooms where the roof and floor meet at an angle.

CHECKLIST

An over-ambitious weekend to-do list.

  • Fill in some cracks with “Great Stuff” to keep those little critters out. 🐭

  • Pick up a new cooler for tailgate season.

  • Replace the napkin stash in your car glove box.

  • Call your grandma.

  • Donate the summer clothes you didn’t wear this year.
